Next, drill a matching hole through the center of a 2-inch wooden disc, sized so the dowel fits snugly without slipping. Cut your dowel in half, insert the rough-cut end into the wooden disc, then feed the factory-cut end through the lid and screw the lid onto the jar (always keep the jar horizontal while doing this, or the dowel can fall inside).

Finally, drill several rows of holes around the jar's body — these let termites in — plus a couple of small drainage holes in the bottom so water doesn't pool. That's it. You've got a working monitoring station.

Installing Them the Smart Way

Dig holes roughly 3–4 feet from your foundation, spaced 3–4 feet apart, using an auger bit sized to match the jar. Bury each station so only the cap sits at ground level — deep enough to stay hidden from mowers, shallow enough that you can still pop the lid off later. Check them monthly. If a dowel has disappeared or collapses easily when you press on it, congratulations — you've found termite activity, and it's time to swap in bait to take out the whole colony.

The tight spacing is really what makes this approach work. Because these stations cost pennies compared to commercial ones, you can afford to install them close together — dramatically improving the odds that a wandering termite bumps into one before it finds your home.
